What would Jimmy Buffett do?

Three country songs have dominated my brain this week.

Kenny Chesney’s new single Come Over is lovely. I’ve woken up singing it three mornings in a row. I go through phases of being smitten with Kenny’s voice and then needing a break from it. I’m loving this one though, and I’m still hooked on You and Tequila. The official video is a little self-indulgent for my liking. I pictured something completely different in my mind before seeing the video they went with, which is probably why this one seems so wrong to me. You could always close your eyes while you play this…

Country covers of mainstream tracks can end up sounding a little cheesy. But David Nail’s cover of Adele’s much-copied Someone Like You is beautiful. Blair Garner played it on his radio show this week and I stopped what I was doing to listen to it properly. It’s surprising how the emphasis changes when a man sings a song made famous by a woman. I felt connected to it in a completely different way.

After not hearing it for years, I was listening to some Nashville radio this week and they played Alan Jackson & Jimmy Buffett’s It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere. How it can be almost 10 years old is beyond me! This thing is three-and-a-bit minutes of pure summer and if you don’t wish you were in the video, I’m not sure we can be friends. Few things have tempted me to break my vow of sobriety, strap on a grass skirt and down some frozen margaritas in a sandy tiki bar more than listening to this again. I’m taking it as a sign I’m due a tropical holiday.
